Donkeys evolved in arid climates with limited forage. Here in upstate New York, it is particularly important that donkeys have access to the right balance feed all year round. When allowed unrestricted access to green pastures, donkeys can eat themselves into weight and health problems very quickly. This means that a donkey in New York needs careful pasture management and a lot of hay and straw!
